Hello from Vancouver!

Thanks to my mother, I was able to pick up a new camera this past Thursday. It's a Sony Cybershot DSC-H3, and it's awesome.

New Digi Camera

After a some two month absence of having an operational digital camera (see here), I finally scrapped together enough change to purchase a new one earlier today.

Admittedly though, the camera which I purchased - a Fuji Finepix A900 - is inferior to me old Kodak Z612. Not that I didn't know that when I purchased it though. Being more a "point & shoot" camera I knew it would lack the goodies of my Z612, but I didn't think I'd miss them as much as I do. You see, the Z612 was a full out camera - the type of camera you're more likely to see at a semi-professional photo shoot. Equipped with a 12x zoom, a host of colour options (from sepia to black and white) as well as automatic light sensors, motion detection and a night-mode beyond approach, it had most all of the bells and whistles one needed. Sure, it wasn't an "HDR"...but, tis was damn good enough. My new Fuji has none of that stuff - the picture quality is mediocre, the video mode is sub-par and the zoom is a mere 3x. Blah.

Well, at least I got to finally update my profile picture (in case you hadn't already noticed). Yes, I know... You're probably wondering why I never smile in my self-portraits... Well, I just don't. I'm not necessarily unhappy, just one who likes to be taken serious in front of a device which has made people look stupid for a century. Know what I'm saying? Probably not...

One thing I will say about that picture is that the 51lbs I lost over the past week is clearly evident. Been starving myself - which sounds overly harsh, but meh.

Electronic Envy

Now that both Halo 3 and Project Gotham 4 have been released I am starting to feel what could be best described as "electronic envy". Yeah, now that most every gamer has their hands on an XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii or Playstation 3, I am feeling as if I'm missing out on the fun. Though, as I said some time ago, I was reluctant to purchase any of the new game systems due to poor technical quality, sub-par games and monthly-rent prices.

And I still believe a great deal of what I said, but hell, like any gamer I cannot resist the allure of a new Halo game. After enjoying the first two games - the second of which I currently own - I am feeling the need for Halo 3.

PGR4 would also be great as I've been enjoying the second game for some time now. PGR2's re-play is unlimited, but I'd love to be racing the Zonda F around the 'Ring with full wet weather effects.

Wish the systems weren't so bloody expensive...

And on the subject of electronics, I must admit that having no digital camera is a real burden. Been without if for a couple of months and the fact that I can't take pictures of anything is really starting to anger me. First and foremost, I'd love to update my profile picture. So, when I gather the cash, I can decide between purchasing an XBOX or a new digi camera. And I believe the camera is most definitely the better idea of the two.

Broken Digital Camera

Take a look at this picture I recently snapped at Lexus of Vancouver:

Awesome, wouldn't you agree?

Well, expect that to be the last picture I'll take for a long while. Tragedy struck my personal camera (a Kodak Z612) on Saturday when I was running down a hallway and dropped my camera from a good 4 feet.

When it first happened, I thought "thank God for burber carpet", but it turns out that it didn't matter. My beautiful and well kept Kodak is now nothing but Rubbish.

After the incident had taken place, the camera remained with the power in the on position, but the screen was entirely black (which worried me, to say the least). I then proceeded to turn the camera off, hoping that the screen would reappear, but that failed. Once off the camera refused to properly power-up - turning the power on and then off it a matter of seconds. Furthermore, the retractable and mechanical lens ceased to operate.

After some fiddling around I eventually got the lens to come out (which it now does 50% of the time), thus allowing the power to stay on. HOWEVER, the camera refuses to focus; you'd get the impression it's had 10 pitchers of beer. What's really strange is that the camera starts to focus when you zoom out, but the problem is that the lens won't go past half way point on the zoom and immediately turns the camera off.

I went to Kodak's website looking for solutions and repair options and it states a number of the problems which I've been encountering are as a result of dropping the camera.

The estimated chargers (excluding shipping, etc) is anywhere from $50 to $200. I'm screwed, I haven't got that kind of money sitting around and imagine I won't for a long while.
